Chris Young is singing from a broken heart on his latest single.

On Friday (June 14), the country singer unveiled a new track from his upcoming sixth studio album called "Drowning," a grief-stricken song that sings to the pangs of losing an old friend. "I can't help that all I think about is/ How you were taken way too soon," mourns in the track's chorus, "It ain't the same here without you/ I gotta say missin' you comes and waves/ And tonight I'm drowning."

Moments after he released the number, co-written with Corey Crowder and Josh Hoge, Young spoke candidly of the tune's backstory on Instagram. "When I wrote this song with @coreycrowder and @joshhogemusic, we each thought of someone that we lost way too soon," he wrote. "For me, it was one of my best friends, Adam. Missing you comes in waves and tonight I'm drowning. This one is for you, brother."

"Drowning" is the second offering to appear on Young's upcoming seventh studio album after its leadoff record, "Raised in Country" arrived in January. Earlier this week, the 34-year-old succumbed to tears while delivering an emotional live debut performance of the track at Grand Opry.

“The reason that I got so emotional about it – the reason I wrote this song is because my buddy Adam passed away a few years ago, he would drive over and sit in the parking lot with me because they basically in the contract for Nashville Star said we could film you everywhere but the bathroom,” Chris later revealed.

“So we were all horrified that they were constantly filming or recording us without our knowledge. The only thing I knew to do was go sit in the parking lot with my buddy Adam. When he passed away I was like, 'I’d never really written anything about it until this song.'”
