I am literally obsessed with the Kentucky Derby.  I don't know why.  There's just something amazing about a day where you can wear the biggest most ridiculous hat ever and it's considered perfectly socially acceptable.  And paired with a hot pink dress?! SIGN THIS GIRL UP!!!

I'm planning a party with Mint Juleps on my pretend veranda while dressed up in bows, pearls, hats and monograms.  Please join me!

Here are my favorite Mint Julep recipes:

So this isn't the traditional Julep but the Mason Jar cups, and the pink straw have me sold!

  • 3 Fresh Mint Leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Mint Simple Syrup
  • Crushed Ice
  • 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons (1 oz.) of bourbon
  • 1 fresh mint sprig
  • Powdered sugar optional.

And the traditional Mint Julep served at Churchill Downs:

I need to invest in julep cups! How fancy!! Oh, and you must use Early Times Kentucky Whiskey to make it official!!

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • Sprigs of fresh mint
  • Crushed ice
  • Early Times Kentucky Whiskey
  • Silver Julep Cups

Make a simple syrup by boiling the sugar and water together for 5 minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with 6 to 8 fresh sprigs of mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup up with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup with 2 oz. of Early Times Whiskey!  Stir rapidly with straw to frost the outside of the glass! Garnish with mint sprigs.

And my favorite quote from last years Derby:

Me: "Grandpa, what's the difference between a jockey and a horseback rider?"

My Grandpa: "I don't know, Michelle.  A couple hundred pounds."
